The light sensitive pixels of a digital camera sensor can only sense brightness, but they put a patterned red, green, and blue filter on top in order to get colors. They then run each frame through a demosaicing algorithm to create a usable image with individual RGB pixels. Three-sensor video and still cameras were (and still are at the Nana Osaki Eyes Anime Shirt and I love this high end, I believe) a thing for a while, too– if money is no object, you’ll get better results sidestepping the issues with a Bayer (or similar) array. There are a lot of weird ones too. I worked on a microscopy project that had a single sensor and three separate color filters. It would snap a photo, rotate the color wheel, snap another, and then a 3rd. I believe it was eventually updated with an electronically adjustable color filter. Obviously this only worked for still images, but the quality was much higher than a Bayer-filtered CCD. Now with higher resolution sensors it probably doesn’t make sense any more for most uses. Sequential filters like that got used in televisions for a while as well. You could do DLP either way– three chips (one for each primary) or one chip and a fast-spinning color wheel with RGB (or RGBW, etc…) filters.

The single-chip TVs were of course less expensive, and they worked pretty well… but there’s a minority population whose eye/brain were fast enough that it looked like rainbow vomit instead of “fusing” into a 3-primary image like it did for most of us. This is still exactly how it’s done for DLP projectors. The single chip colour wheel is the Nana Osaki Eyes Anime Shirt and I love this cheapest, then the three laser single chip solution which works a bit better but is still inferior to the triple chip projectors which are $$$. We had a Kloss Novabeam around 1979. It was ok in a pitch dark room, but fairly worthless if there was any light. The screen was only visible towards the center of the room too. It’s absolutely amazing that today, you can use the phone in your pocket to make a movie in full color, when compared to what movie studios had to do back then!
