I stopped taking responsibility for her emotions a long time ago, and it’s been easier to deal with her since then. That said, if it’s a boundary I need to enforce or something I don’t have time to give her space to work through, I just use the same authoritative parenting words that I would use with my 5 year old (acknowledge emotions/feelings, set the boundary, give behavioral options). “I see you’re upset, and it’s okay to feel like I’m stopping you from bonding with the baby. Unfortunately, I cannot let you kiss him while you have a cough/have allergies. You can wear a mask while you hold him so you can be close to him.” It’s surprisingly effective. This is actually super helpful to me. Thank you. It seems our moms behave mostly in the same manner. I’ve struggled all my life with her on this very thing and it’s why i’ve suppressed so much with her already because as soon as i tell her she has hurt me she falls apart, changes her story, and tries to be the person who is hurt most.

I have always tried to be the My Pitbull Is Harmless it’s me you should worry about shirt in addition I really love this bigger person but really ive only catered to her behavior out of fear of hurting her. I just hate seeing her cry and that shit haunts me and fills me with so much guilt. I gotta work on that for sure. I do believe her to be a good person, she just has terrible self awareness and rarely see’s a situation beyond her own emotions I’m going through this exact thing down to my mother with “allergies.” Baby was diagnosed with covid on Saturday after an ER trip with a high fever. My husband and I know have it. Hugs to you – we’ll get through it. No one else in our friends did that. People were letting their babies meet everyone from the day they were born. They even had parties and took the 1 month old to a packed sporting event. I was adamant about this and got some heat for it for sure. We did it for many reasons and I’m so glad i did. Im introverted and my house is my resting place. I knew if anyone tried to come over and “help” i would only be more stressed and anxious. On top of that, who wants to get sick with a newborn as a FTM? I definitely don’t feel an ounce of guilt after seeing the behavior when i did finally let them meet her.
