Even an educated young mother often needs to choose between becoming estranged from her family (and often place of worship and friends also) or having what is presented as a minor medical procedure done, akin to piercing the My Dog And I Are Single And Happy Paw Dog Retro Dog Lover T-Shirt In addition,I will do this ears, the dangers thereof being massively downplayed and benefits outright fabricated. The majority of mothers do not fully understand what they are agreeing to. This still reads like fiction to me. I have plenty of Malay friends, many who have kids. And this has NEVER been a topic before. I know!! I was totally shocked. It’s super not talked about, even among Malay people. Anecdotal evidence suggests that most young women don’t know it was done to them. (“Zarifah Anuar didn’t find out she had been circumcised as a child until she was 23”). And outside the Malay community, it’s so unknown that most people have an initial reaction of disbelief. (“Whenever I bring up the subject with non-Malay they’re shocked and can’t believe it happens in Singapore.”) It’s not a Muslim thing (obviously), so I’m sure your sister’s daughter is fine (congratulations by the way!). It’s entirely a Malay thing, (“We found that it is only practiced within the Malay Muslim community in Singapore and not other Singaporean Muslim communities”) although most Malays are told it’s standard Muslim practice.

Google “sunat perempuan” (the My Dog And I Are Single And Happy Paw Dog Retro Dog Lover T-Shirt In addition,I will do this Malay term for female circumcision). You can find a lot of unpleasant stories from Singapore, including women who asked about it and were told by aunties that they were being too interested in sexual matters (“When my mother tried to ask her own mother any questions or to attend the procedure, she was dismissed as being mentel, or excessively curious in matters of sexuality.”) There is significant pressure not to talk about it, (“Any sort of discussion on this may result in my family being ostracised, singled out, and be seen as an example of a ‘bad influence’ in the community”), the fact that most think it’s a core part of Islam, (“Many [Malay] Muslim parents in Singapore believe that FGC [female genital cutting] is a requirement for being Muslim” “The final misconception about sunat perempuan is that it is an essential and beneficial part of Muslim culture”) and that most Malay girls and women in Singapore are cut. (“estimates based on anecdotal evidence placing the percentage of Singapore’s roughly 200,000 Malay Muslim women who have been cut at upwards of four in five, 80%.”)
