I’m adamant that it’s not unreasonable to expect a better quality of life, comfort, and wealth when achieving significant professional advances. Could they cut back? Sure. People get by on less. Yep, I’ve pivoted to more aggressive salary expectations precisely because of this. And we’re seeing that more broadly throughout the UK economy with sustained wage growth (which in itself feeds into inflation). And also to add to this the younger people in the work force are also paying £100ish in student loans each month on 40k as basically a graduate tax. If student loans disappeared (which I think they should, but another story) people on 40k would have pretty much 1k of extra money each year which would surely be better for everyone (except student finance). This is exactly how I feel. The work I’ve put in over the last 10 years to get me where I think is a good place really isn’t. I could cancel my gym membership, cancel Spotify, manage my meals/food shop, but I shouldn’t have to. I’m just going to go with it and see what happens in the next year! Yeah, we’re doing okay but we’ve still worked at getting our weekly shop down a bit and I’m finding that things such as the theatre or going out for a meal we do less.* We’ve both had significant salary rises over the last few years. Sure, we aren’t starving and we can cut some costs if needs be. But as you say, we shouldn’t have to.

It’s crazy looking at salaries on offer in Nottingham. Loads around the 30k mark. Pretty much minimum wage to live on these days. I think it’s regional. I’m starting a new job soon at £40k working from home which is great because rent on my 2 bed flat is £675, I’ll notice a big difference in savings and disposable income. It’s well above the average, but that just means our national average is stagnant, and hasn’t risen in line with inflation over the last 15~ish years.
