I haven’t heard this in close to 30 years! I was in 4th grade, and I was assigned to do a project on Joplin. During my research, I listened to as much of his music as I could track down, and I certainly gravitated toward this piece. Same deal, Scott Joplin is huge in American music, had no idea he was black. I am a long time musician and very well acquainted with Scott Joplin’s music. Played many of his songs many times. Didn’t know any of this. And it’s very sad to hear. One other thing to note is there is a guy from Chicago by the name of Reginald Robinson who won a MacArthur genius grant years ago because of his dedication to and keeping Ragtime music alive.

Hell who would of thought ragtime would make a comeback Brian Setzer Orchestra and Cherry Poppin’ Daddies. I’m so glad I was a teenager in the ‘90s. It was a wild time. Do you mean the first Super Mario Bros? Nah, that’s some sort of calypso. The music in Super Mario Bros. 2 on the other hand definitely has ragtime. The title, character select, and overworld theme specifically. Same with the Athletic theme in both Super Mario Bros. 3 and Super Mario World. No stress, it’s like 2 am where I’m at so I legit thought there might be a Nintendo theme that I’d just blocked from memory It wasn’t from the era. The sting takes place like 20 years after Joplin died lol. But yes, responsible for the resurgence in his work. He’s like Van Gogh a little bit, isn’t he? Joplin’s music was appreciated in his life, but he bore the “shame” of being Black. Then the syphilis probably caused mental illness late in life. Van Gogh was unappreciated in life, struggled with the shame of mental illness for years, then either killed himself in a breakdown or was murdered. It makes me wonder how many generations miss the potential greatness in people because we still haven’t created a society where people can feel safe enough to create works of art.
