The issue is the old “you are with me or against me” mentality. Anyone who doesn’t align fully with an ideology is perceived as a threat because it means “the other” might have influence. We’ve reached the point where the two authoritarian parties in this country have devolved into getting votes by telling you the other party is pure, unadulterated evil. As such, a centrist is supporting 50% evil.

If you stand in the middle between the non Nazis and the Nazis, what does that make you? Centrism in the USA isn’t possible. One side wants to stop gay people from having rights. There isn’t a “middle ground” there.
