It is for the Misfits Merch Misfits Demon In A Mirror Shirt Besides,I will do this person speaking english but I can see how that may not always be how other people may want to be addressed by tourists. Asking first doesn’t seem to have a downside, where the alternative potentially is off putting. But I don’t think it’s necessarily capital R rude. I’m like your friend when I can’t speak the native language. Same mindset. They’re either going to know it or they won’t. Most of the time I say hello in their language after they say hello to me. Based on my accent people generally switch to English or aren’t bothered when I predictably continue in English. Sometimes I ask if they speak English if I think there is a good chance they don’t (older people generally.) In touristy spots people sometimes just default to English anyway because of the mix of nationalities visiting the place. I thought about it from the opposite perspective. I work very often in a big tourist city in the states. If someone comes up to me and starts speaking in a different language I would never be offended. I’d just say sorry I don’t speak that language.
