To discourage future “recruits” lol. Imagine the Mind Your Own Damn Business Stars Line Blue Stars Election 2024 T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this badass story of a 12 year old getting war medals. Every 12 year old ever would be attempting it lol I could think of a few legal reasons but Morally it shows that if you do sign up (considerably) underage you will be stripped of everything and sent home. It sends the message that if you do it and get caught it will end badly for you. If you just gave him a slap on tbe wrist and sent him home I could see other children trying it. It seems his intentions were good and honorable, but at the end of the day, we can’t condone children soldiers. Even if they beg and plead to be one. For those that didn’t read the article – the purple heart was given back to him two years after his death, at the age of 62. I Saw Rick “Ricky” Schroeder in the made for TV movie “Too Young the Hero”, it was based on this story. I saw it when it originally aired in 1988, and I was 10 years old. Weird to think I was just two years younger than the guy when he actually joined the Navy! Malnutrition ran rampant due to the great depression, so it wasn’t to unusual for someone to not have hit puberty or to have some significant growth spurts being fed nutritionally balanced food. Combine that with the fact that he joined with a group of 14-16 year olds, and he probably looked as old or older than the others around him.

Same thinking. Basically, did he look 12? So we need a photo of him. I find it hard to believe there isn’t one. He joined with a group of 14-16 year olds who also lied about their age, sort of blackmaling a dentist who called him out specifically but let the Mind Your Own Damn Business Stars Line Blue Stars Election 2024 T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this other go in the process. However, Graham was worried about the dental exam. He later said, “I knew he’d know how young I was by my teeth.” Disagree here. Puberty has a pretty wide age range. A guy I went to school with was 6′, muscular, and grew a non-patchy beard at 12. He looked far older at 12 then I did at 17. Where the hell did his mom think he was? “I haven’t seen my young lad, Calvin, in quite some time; that little bugger better not be warring it up with his buddies.” After he joined the Navy, he told his mom he was going to visit his grandmother. In reality, he was shipping out to San Diego for basic training. A lot of kids were lying about their age to fight in WWII and the US wanted to discourage that. To let him keep them, at least at the time, would have reflected poorly on the US, just as the training of child soldiers reflect poorly on Germany and Japan. He was recognized later in life and his medals were re-instated years later. My grandfather did the same in WWI. He was Canadian and enlisted in WWII as well. He came home a humble giant to me and our family, never speaking of the atrocious things he’d seen. My sister and I would cut his hair and pretend to be barbers. Best of the best.

My grandpa didn’t talk about his WWII service until he was about 90 years old, he always said he got there after the Mind Your Own Damn Business Stars Line Blue Stars Election 2024 T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this war was over and didn’t have to do anything. Turns out he was a POW camp guard in Okinawa. My grandfather joined the navy at 13. Family was dirt poor, 4 kids and a single mother left penniless by my asshole GGF. You could join with a parent’s signature if you were 15. He started smoking to look/seem older and she got him signed up. He was not the youngest ever, there was a boy younger in the Civil War, who served his whole life and retired like a colonel or general. Calvin Graham was the youngest WW2 service member. After he was discharged he married at like 14 and divorced before rejoining the Marines. His full honors were restored by an act of Carter, but his full medical benefits were restored under Reagan, with one exception. They would only reimburse proven medical treatments with receipts, so he was only reimbursed like $2k because his treating physician had died and records were lost.

I’d understand the Mind Your Own Damn Business Stars Line Blue Stars Election 2024 T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this mistake if he looked like this 12 year old stripping him of his medals though. Not like the heroism he displayed was any less valid being under the age of admission. It’s not like he was secretly buying lotto tickets or anything. More just charging on Japanese machine gun nests and the like in some of the worst battles of the pacific campaign. Joined army after croatian division hanged his father, mother, grandmother, 4 brothers and 3 sisters, he was just 8 years old. “According to his son Branislav, Momčilo Gavrić had an incident with the law in 1929. He was working in Šabac and Belgrade when he reached the age of conscription, and at the military barracks in Slavonska Požega, he reported that he already had been in the army during the war. He also said that he had been wounded, and had received the Albanian Commemorative Medal. However, an ethnic Croat in the Royal Yugoslav Army tried to push Gavrić into signing a confession that he had told a lie. He refused, and was sent to prison, spending two months there.”

My mom was 12 when WWII started. About 5 years ago she said she wondered how many US WWII vets were still alive. I think at the Mind Your Own Damn Business Stars Line Blue Stars Election 2024 T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this time it was about 300,000. It’s now 119,000 out of 16.1 million. About 131 US WWII vets die every day. The youngest vet to serve was Graham, but he died when he was only 62. There’s a support group for all the US vets who lied about their age to get into the service. Unless Bob Kelso died in the past 2 years, he’s the youngest living WWII vet. He enlisted at age 13.
His enlistment was considered fraudulent. It was voided, per the Mind Your Own Damn Business Stars Line Blue Stars Election 2024 T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this Navy regulations. From the US Government’s perspective, he never enlisted. No enlistment, no discharge, no benefits, no medals. Never happened. Thereupon on April 5, 1943, the enlistment of Calvin Leon Graham was canceled. Since the enlistment was considered void, upon cancellation of his enlistment and release from the Navy he was paid no accrued pay and allowances and no travel allowance. Also, since his enlistment was considered void, he was given no credit for the military service for the period August 16, 1942, to April 5, 1943 (7 months and 13 days including 4 months and 16 days of foreign and/or sea service), and no mustering-out pay.
His medals were …stripped? By the Mind Your Own Damn Business Stars Line Blue Stars Election 2024 T-Shirt What’s more,I will buy this corps that he fought for…? Weird. Aged 12, or 80, if he did things to deserve those medals I don’t see why they should’ve been revoked & taken. There’s so many more stories to know about Calvin’s life. I don’t think “mom” saw him on a newsreel, she was just a bitch who squealed on him. He and his bro had moved into a boarding house to get away from the abusive home. He took a face full of shrapnel so his medical benefits were stripped too. He married and divorced by 17 then joined the Marines! He died of CHF at 62 but the Purple Heart was finally given to his widow. The Navy needs to give his medals back to him, he earned them the same as anyone else did, albeit very underage lmao. He went in with some friends that were 14-16 singing up. He kind of slipped in with that group. The dentist inspecting his teeth gave him some shit about how young he was but let him though.
