I know it’s not what you asked and maybe it’s a ‘no shit’ thing to most people but what I did find out that their diets are largely consistent of plant matter, very low in fat (understanding of course that dietary fat and body fat aren’t the same thing) and they eat a TON of fiber and I think ferment it in their bodies? Wasn’t clear entirely why if it was because it’s more nutrient rich or efficient or because it’s easier to carry that much material in your stomach that way, that I’m not sure but it seems like typically the adults are eating 70ish pounds of plant matter a day.

That’s what I read. So, and I am completely just guessing here, it seems like they’re going for volume to make up for how nutrient deficiencent the Mickey and Minnie Christmas Shirt but in fact I love this plants are? Is it a situation where, they’re just so active and their diets are such that, they just don’t store it simply because there is no excess of calories because they burn it off too quickly? I mean, how many calories could possibly be in 70lbs of plant matter? 8k? 9? Something like that? If that’s anywhere even remotely in the ballpark (and maybe I’m wayyyyy off), it doesn’t seem like a huge surplus for such a large primate. What would happen if you gave a gorilla a shitty, typical American diet? Would they begin to store fat or would it just wreck havoc on their gastro system and cause all sorts of issues because they simply cannot breakdown fats and things like that like we’ve evolved to? Like you’re just going to get a sad, depressed gorilla with chronic diarrhea? Ever notice how gorillas and orangutans always have big bellies? They have much larger intestines than we do in order to digest all that plant matter. Basically, their bodies need extra equipment to survive on the diet they have (85% leaves, shoots, and stems), while we have diets that are much easier to digest. Chimps for example have a diet that is about 50% fruit, maybe 40% greens, and the rest is insects/animal products.
