I think they went up exponentially in 2022 ish, i was told something to do with electronic components for new cars. I bought a VW up from cinch just before the massive hikes, prices went up so much that a few months later they were offering me about the same money back in trade in for the same car. I did track prices for a while after out of interest and equivalent cars were going for 1500-2000 more. The other economic issues at hand are the level of pricing elasticity in the market and inflationary pressure. With an effective shortage in the market, the amount people are willing to pay stretches beyond their usual appetite. i.e. in a normal market, someone may be willing to pay 10% more than their perceived standard value. In a more competitive market, that can stretch to maybe 100% more. Perceived standard value for a buyer almost always lags behind actual value because humans aren’t great at rationalistic thinking. People who are more desperate than you for a car will be willing to pay more.
