There are those who cry “who needs society’s approval, bla bla?” You don’t, but it is not your doctor’s job to determine whether the lady outside your hospital room is your reliable partner or the crazy stalker lady that stabbed you in the first place or your ex who hopes to rekindle your love on your hospital bed. A piece of paper proving who you are does wonders for everyone’s piece of mind. It’s also complicated for courts and judges to determine whether you have a real claim to that apartment you lived in for 10 years with your ex before she dropped dead. And so on.
