Novak: It gets a little loose. It’s funny; you’re not supposed to talk in there. We even saw signs, an increase of signs. Prohibiting whispering? Berlant: “No Whispering.” Novak: There are set hours. What are the wellness rituals that you’re both obsessed with? Berlant: I have to say, this really embodies my approach to my life, which is that yesterday morning I woke up and did 25 minutes of floor Pilates, convinced myself the whole day was positively inflected in a way that was so transformative, and texted 1,400 people about it. Last night I was getting ready for bed, and I was like, I actually can’t wait to get up and do my Pilates. And then of course this morning rolls around and I’m like, uh-oh. Then I’m like, you’re doing it, bitch! And then I did it, showered, popped a quarter of an Adderall. I was like: This is a new world, honey babe. I was really excited about my new reality. And so, will I do it tomorrow, right?

This [hair] was dyed this morning. She was crying, and I felt like I was witnessing the first moment she felt like the new hair color hadn’t changed everything.
