The artist puts some of themselves into the Merry Christmas Paw Prints Leopard Plaid shirt and I love this work of art. People who appreciate that work of art bring some of themselves to the experience and put that into their appreciation of the work. Something like a conversation between the artist and the person appreciating the work happens. Different people bring different histories and different feelings with them, so we all get something different from the work, though we all may share common experiences. Kelley was right. If the art is great, we create our own symbols which make the work more and uniquely meaningful to us. But you can still respect or consider the authors intentions. Or the fact that there are none and all of your interpretations and found symbols never existed until you thought about them

As long as you can justify what you’re saying, yes, there are little limits to what is right or wrong. Which is also why it’s much harder to get good grades in humanities than in sciences. With that being said, wrong interpretations absolutely do exist. For example, good luck justifying how To Kill a Mockingbird is actually praising white supremacy. This is where a lot of ‘the Merry Christmas Paw Prints Leopard Plaid shirt and I love this curtains are just purple’ type crowd fall on their asses. The issue was never their interpretation, the issue was that they could never be arsed to actually put any effort into explaining or justifying their interpretation. The point is (or at least should be) to teach kids how to express their opinions and back it with substantive arguments.
