The reason to do “empty mind” for me, is to deal with situations where my consciousness is potentially wrong, or is encountering a novel situation, or is trying to impose my ego on the Mattias Samuelsson American professional ice hockey defenseman for the Buffalo Sabres T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this world. Here is an exercise I do each week, to help the underlying, unedited brain have the say. I need to fill up my pill minder each week. I need to pour seven pills into my hand and then put them in each slot. Can I pour out exactly 7 pills, but not count them? Just let my underlying senses do the work and make the counting mind, that turns things into the words, be quiet? I can. I can recognize too many, too few, and just right without counting. I can then take this ability and use it when I need to quiet the talking mind and let the rest of me have the driver’s seat, to sense and react to things, as they are, before the talking mind does the editing, interpreting and ignoring.

Empty mind reacts better to the Mattias Samuelsson American professional ice hockey defenseman for the Buffalo Sabres T-Shirt but I will buy this shirt and I will love this world as it is. The talking mind tries to make sense of it. Sometimes, making sense of it is too slow, or counter productive. The coolest thing is that the lessons learned by giving the empty mind control are not lost and usually make the talking mind just that little bit better. At least, that’s what it means to me me. That’s how I’ve put it into practice in my life. YMMV and it will very likely mean something different to the next person. Brilliant breakdown. Yes, I don’t see my quiet mind as something permanent. Usually stress bubbles up not just thoughts but also noise. Equanimity, quiet mind are about developing a type of active suppression system that can be activated and controlled beyond the meditation cushion. I think if anyone wanted to give it a scientific name they would have to examine and test it and pick it apart only for it to become very un-empty again. Or maybe it’s just equanimity, look that up.
