Yes, but what were you doing ??? OP is absolutely correct. For highly skilled jobs, the salaries in the US are 2-5X other countries. We needed 2 cars as a family. Didn’t seem that crazy for US standards, 1000 USD a month including insurance for 2 cars. $1000/mo on car expenses is insane for a family making $72,000. This isn’t a COL issue, it’s a budgeting issue. There’s a QOL quotient at play here, too. There’s more to life for a lot of us than living in tract housing and taking the train everywhere. Somehow there’s a whole subset of people who have convinced themselves that driving yourself privately in a car at anytime you’d like anywhere you’d like is somehow the signal of a terrible life compared to taking a train and bus at specific times of day to specific places.

Being able to drive a car anytime anywhere privately is one of the Mathew Barzal The Eras Tour New Shirt it is in the first place but most luxurious things you can do as a human being. I used to live in a city with excellent public transport. I hated waiting in a snowstorm for the bus. I hated waiting for the subway when its 90 degrees in the summer and all your clothes are sticking to you and you’re piled in next to everyone. Its hard to find parking, and driving takes more time than public transit. But it comes with benefits too, it usually means that you have better access to bakeries, cafes, grocery without a car than you would in America with a car. This all effects QOL. I lived in a city before where the grocery store was on the first floor of my 20+ floor apartment complex. I had 2 movie theaters within a 15 minute walk. And I had to walk 4 minutes to get to a long street lined full of restaraunts, bars, cafes. When you get rid of parking lots and build up, suddenly everything gets much closer together.
