Again, context matters. Here’s an absurd example of bad management pumping up the Master AI before it masters you skull T-Shirt but in fact I love this stock price in the short term to benefit executives with options and hedge funds who will own the stock for a short period of time. If a company is trading at an absurd high multiple to their earnings, has no upcoming growth in the business organically to justify that valuation multiple and management goes out and borrows money at a high interest rate and repurchases shares. This would be horrible for the business as they’ll have an interest expense and principle to pay back that did not give the shareholders as much value as opposed to not doing nothing even. But, you could also have competent management see they have a very cheap stock price in regards to their current earnings and future growth prospects. So they could repurchase shares if they are at a discount that will allow shareholders to have more value than using money on a new line of business or an alternate investment opportunity like marketable securities of the total stock market or a risk free debt instrument over any given period of time

“competent management” yeah this is the Master AI before it masters you skull T-Shirt but in fact I love this problem. I mean sure in theory it can be what you’re laying out there, but greedy people tend to not be competent for anything other than their wealth accumulation. And this is what we deal with more often than not. That’s definitely true, it’s unfortunate. But long term share buybacks can be amazing, really. Eventually businesses hit the mature stage of the business life cycle, they can’t put any new money back to work at rates above market return, they either give the money to owners in the form of a dividend, retain earnings and invest them on owners behalf in marketable securities or a debt instrument or repurchase shares. People really underestimate how much value is destroyed when big companies take cash and try to start a new line of business outside of their core operations or buying another business which they usually overpay for and synergies always being overstated. Buybacks are all contextual, they are not all evil and ripping off shareholders. Some have been terrific, Warren Buffett has written about this in depth and obviously has made a fortune from them.
