If they’ll be out of pocket due to having to support adult children who are in full time work, then it’s fair to ask them to contribute a little, and it helps teach them how to budget so they don’t get a nasty surprise when they move out. But if they don’t need the money then it is a bit fucked to make your adult child pay rent, when they could be saving up as much as possible to get their own place and move on with their lives. It’s a desperate parent that is forced to be sponsored by their own children to meet their own financial obligations. What if they didn’t have kids that they could charge? What would happen to the house then? If their child pays for their own food and doesn’t use mom or dad’s money for anything anyway – that ‘child’ is hardly adding any costs to the parents living situation. Maybe a small percentage of gas and electricity – but that’s it. It’s a crazy cop-out to expect compensation for ‘letting’ your own child live with you if they are an otherwise a responsible person that is doing what they can to help themselves and progress in life. If this adult-child sits on their bum ass all day, doesn’t work, doesn’t pay for their own food, needs mom and dad for any ‘spending money’, and is not in some form of education/training/professional development – then sure, have a hard talk with them and let them know that if they don’t get their act together then they might be shown the door (as long as you’ve already honestly done what you can as a parent to support and encourage them by this point) – but to demand money from your children that are starting the game of monopoly and are trying to get ahead in life is insane to me.
