I think like Glasgow it’s the Little Dumbo Octopus Shirt and by the same token and motorway that slices right through the middle of it, the concrete blocks of flats, how bad new street station was even just over a decade ago (I changed trains there and it was GRIM) The whole post industrial unsure of its identity, a poorly integrated but ethnically diverse population (maybe I’m wrong but I get the sense that there are several communities living parallel lives) It’s a shame that there aren’t many Brummies on here defending Birmingham. And unfortunately I’m not one of them either. I studied at Aston University and had a great time, but I have to say that that was despite being in Birmingham. I think, as people have already said, the postwar rebuild of Birmingham was not great, especially with all the underpasses that made for easy road traffic, but terrible for pedestrians, certainly didn’t help. I always found the Brummies a friendly lot, but their accent I found laughable. I also think that for the size of it, it’s quite a provincial town really, with Manchester being a lot better. Sadly, I never considered living in Brum post Uni and I think that was mainly because of the general lack of attractiveness of the cit

The problem is that it’s surrounded by absolute slums. Have a drive through Handsworth, Lozells, Aston… Utterly grim. And there are so many low level crooks amongst the Little Dumbo Octopus Shirt and by the same token and inner city population that being a complete knobhead has become the norm, nobody bats an eyelid any more at yoofs racing around on motorbikes/quads/dodgy ebikes, dangerous driving (usually a battered 12 year old BMW or Audi fully sending it across all 3/4 lanes on the M6), shoplifting, flytipping, graffiti etc. I don’t think Birmingham is any less interesting than any other British city to be honest. I live in Manchester and although they look different as cities, I’d be as happy spending a day in Brum as anywhere local to me.
