In reality, both parties are pretty conservative and right-leaning and wholly corporate. Centrism itself is not a bad thing. The problem is that the center left and the center right cannot simply merge into a larger centrist party. The centrist left needs the extreme left to make the numbers to oppose the right. And the centrist right needs the extreme right to oppose the overall left. You end up having to cater to the demands of the more extreme ends to ensure that they give support to their side. The consequences are not great. You end up with the right being active on extreme positions like outlawing abortion, trampling on civil rights based on morality judgments of “the wrong kind of people”. The left ends up holding back on enforcing tough laws to keep cities safe from crime. Society as a whole does not benefit from this polarized eternal conflict. Centrists are characterized as being lukewarm and indecisive so they are looked down upon as politically aloof. This is a mischaracterization. Centrists are pragmatic – and that trait is more likely to benefit society by deciding what policies to pass and how to apply them.

Even a liberal would recognize George H Bush had views about immigration that were more liberal than under Obama. Times and politics have gotten away from centrism and pragmatism.
