I had a partner for a decade where both our names were used by either gender. Think Sam and Bob. Some people got really confused when they first met us in person because they’d assigned genders to us that didn’t match reality. But almost all the Lincolnton High School Alumni Class of 1979 shirt in addition I really love this trans people I know chose definitely gender-specific names. Including one Karen who is not happy about how her name is used and would like to speak to a manager 🙂 Your comment made me run through the names I know, and my personal experience is different! Mostly gender neutral, one trans woman who didn’t change masculine name, and one trans man who changed his female name to a different yet still feminine name. And I even know a cis teen girl who hated her perfectly ordinary name so much she had everyone call her Karen for some reason. I always think of her when people say the meme has made that name unusable. Might be an age thing, I’m in my 50’s and many trans acquaintances are over 40. Some went through in the days when strong new-gender conformity was required, including divorce and one who had to change jobs to one more suitable in order to get surgery. They have strong opinions about that, rendered in traditional Aussie vernacular that makes me wonder whether their former occupation involved sailing.

Yes, definitely an age and region thing. I’m in the Lincolnton High School Alumni Class of 1979 shirt in addition I really love this US, and all the trans people I know are in their 20s and 30s. Just found it interesting. I’m pretty young (a year out of high school) and it’s a mixed bag with my peers. There are some very strongly gendered names, a fair number that just took a shortened / genderswapped version of their birth name, and some very ambiguous ones. Hell, I’m between two groups, I changed mine to Raymond but usually go by Ray which is more neutral. One effect with more neutral names is they can be a bit less alienating to loudly bigoted relatives, but I’m not sure how much that’s actually an influence. I can imagine that people who have experienced gender dysphoria will often want to choose a name to encourage perception of themselves as their correct gender.
