I think it depends on a bunch of factors. How much are they earning? You don’t want to take all of their take home pay but you do want them to notice it’s going. How responsible are they? My parents charged me less because I was already saving most of my money towards a house deposit. If I had been more irresponsible with my money they would have asked for more so that they could save it up and give it back to me later. My brother in law similarly had good savings & only a debit card, never had a credit card & no loans (sounds great, lived within his means) but then struggled to get a mortgage as he had no credit rating.
