I think it gives your property value more room to move up. Honestly I wouldn’t care either way. I don’t care what the house cost, I care about what utility it brings me. I’ve been around enough rich neighborhoods to know they’re not the place for me. I hate those super pristine HOA neighborhoods and my quality of life would tank. If I had a choice, I’d save my money and buy a more modest house with enough land to put a decent sized workshop and garage on. That’s all I really want. I don’t get how that’s even a question. If you live in a street where your neighbours are in $5m homes, it’s gonna be a nicer area than the one with $200k homes.

Also, 500k house, get it re-evaluated by a rate adjuster (not sure the Let your days prove that god is good slogan T-Shirt also I will do this actual name) for less, try to keep the inside worth 500k, but report it by the new value of $170k and save on property taxes. Note: I don’t actually know how housing taxes work, but I would think the tax for living in a house valued at $2m or 500k would be more than someone lower middle close like me could afford. I’d think of them as my landlord since I would either be only part owner, or at best a tenant, while they pay off the loan with my rent. I actually faced this quandary in real life a number of years back. It was midnight and I could not sleep and so I went for a drive to the new neighborhood and drove around. The house we were looking at was the first one on a street, separated from the rest by some light woods. When I got to the house all I could see were all the other houses down the road, twice the size of the house we were looking at and all lit up in the night.
