Covid seems to be easing up on us. The media they consume is one overblown “crisis” after another. When you’re constantly bombarded with that it is difficult to find mental space for long term thinking. Makes it easier to keep the rubes in line. People in the US generally seem to be like this, maybe because of how fast/easy it is to communicate. Everyone wants immediate results/benefit and gets worked up when it doesn’t happen. Obviously this was not done to force Putin to step down, but regime change in Russia would be a strong rallying cry for basically every politician currently in office. “our actions helped Ukraine defend their freedom, and forced a Russian dictator to step down.” that’s their whole m.o., do whatever it takes to distract their base from the big issues so that their stupidly short-sighted Faustian bargains for immediate power (i.e. former president trump) seem like huge victories and their voters don’t care about the long-lasting negative consequences that will affect not just republican voters but the country’s populace at large. that’s at least a part of why for the last few decades they’ve really dug into starting nonsense culture war stuff, immediate distracting victories to keep their voters from holding them accountable to their long-term plans (of which there are none).
