It’s literally the responsibility of the bar to not over-serve people, bartenders have been cutting people off for hundreds of years. Loads of clubs in the city by me used to so this, they probably still do I’m just not a club guy anymore because im old. I always thought it was a great idea that the DD could get soft drinks, coffees/teas whatever and like chicken wings, chips and other snack foods. It’s such a great idea ya seriously. There was local bar near me that had the best chicken tenders. Used to go there just for that and maybe a coke or club soda. They were great to me, but I didn’t tip extra because I didn’t order any drinks. Obviously sitting down at a bar or booth and just ordering water or like a unlimited soda refill is lame but that’s clearly not the case.

No different from occupying a table at a restaurant. If they order food and then stay there for hours drinking water, not cool. I think a good rule of thumb for lingering at bars (also works at coffee shops) is to order something about once an hour. I’d argue a beer is more effort. Was it on tap or in a bottle? Did the server have to list their selection from memory? Many bars also serve specific beers in specific types or branded glasses. This post reads like he wants to hang out. Not tipping extra but taking up a seat at a bar for 2 hours that would normally go to someone who is buying a couple of rounds could be perceived as a dick move.
