My parents didn’t push in my family to get post secondary education. Being so strict that I had to lie about things like where I was going and I was never comfortable with sharing anything with them because I’d always be lectured, even when I was 18 (I’m 27 now). There was always a reason, explanation, etc. Understanding why something is wrong helps immensely in my opinion. My parents made me feel guilty for being bullied as a kid. They gave me the usual “advice” not to listen, to ignore the bullies, and to be the “bigger person” and I know that they probably didn’t believe what I told them happened daily. Frustrated by my crying and coming home with bruises and all that, sometimes they scolded me publicly and even hit me once or twice.
