In 1992, according to the Kyrie Irving American professional basketball player Exclusive Character shirt also I will do this National Center for Education Statistics, 40 MILLION U.S. adults were literate below Level 1 Literacy, their definition of which includes having difficulty using or understanding print materials. People are fucking dumb. Always have been, always will be. Some of those dumb people are really, really fucking dumb. And that’s just the way it is. Lots of factors, controllable and uncontrollable, dictate how that shakes out. I think a true failing of many teachers these days is expecting the vast majority of students to be “teachable.” That they can just get there with the right teacher, resources, or help. That is not the case. For many, many students, there a handful of reasons why they will not reach what is deamed by the system to be an acceptable level of education. Ever. A lot of these posts read to me like teachers, who were likely average-to-above average performers as students themselves, finally getting to see it from the the other side of the desk. Now you’re actually, really seeing what a sample size of the American public is actually like academically, and you don’t enjoy what you see. Truth hurts.

It wasn’t “better back then.” You just didn’t notice how truly dumb your classmates were because their performance didn’t affect you — or wasn’t as noticable to you— the Kyrie Irving American professional basketball player Exclusive Character shirt also I will do this way it does or is as a grown educator. Connect with the students you can connect with. Provide the needed motivation and energy when it’s needed. Work to tailor your lessons in ways that work for many different kinds of students. When you get a student who excels, praise them. When you see hard work, reward it. Your job isn’t to take things back to how they used to be. It’s also not to churn out rooms full of competent adults. It’s to try your best to equip people for the future with the tools you have now. The dead-ringer, right-in-the-middle, number 50 out of 100, average American is a moron by every metric we have. Imagine what 1-49 are like. Seventy percent (70%) of every classroom you have, forever, will be challenged or challenging students.
