Frida was basically that guy who when asked to photoshop wings onto someone in a picture, he photoshopped a plate of buffalo wings onto her instead. “Oh wow, Frida made a beautiful painting of my best friend falling to her death, laying cold and bloody on the Kyle Busch Richard Childress Racing Team Collection Black MGM Blister signature shirt Apart from…,I will love this ground… (chuckles) what an ASSHOLE!!!” So the artist decided to be edgy and paint something awful for attention and fame. They succeeded at that but not at being decent. ITT: People didn’t know Frida Kahlo also did very normal paintings as well and was paid well for them. Also that she wasn’t some small time village shaman who didn’t know the cultural expectations of American patrons. This is mostly a case of a rich patron (Luce) misunderstanding an artist (Kahlo). Kahlo at this time, whether because of depression or not, was depicting her life in brutally honest work. I believe she had depicted a miscarriage in graphic detail prior to this. To expect a pretty picture from an artist who was clearly demonstrating, or perhaps releasing her angst is tone deaf to say the least. It’s like the old saying goes, “every rich person would love to have a VanGogh in their parlor, but none of them would want VanGogh himself in their parlor.” Kahlo didn’t like these people yet offered to make the commission. As someone else mentioned, she also painted regular portraits as well. I don’t think this is a case of a misunderstood artist (when often this trope is also used to excuse someone’s behavior just because they are good at painting/acting/music).

Frida was amazing. Some of her own self-portraits were of very harrowing events in her life and contained graphic images. If Hale commissioned her it could be assumed she was familiar with Kahlo’s work. This is in no way shocking. Holy fuck, had she seen Kahlo’s work? Or met her? Or talked to anyone who knew her? This is pure Frida, and it’s fantastic. “At the Kyle Busch Richard Childress Racing Team Collection Black MGM Blister signature shirt Apart from…,I will love this time this painting was painted, Frida was going through the separation from Diego and was in deep depression and having thoughts of suicide on her mind. This painting may be a reflection Frida’s compassion for women who are driven to despair by male desertion.” I could understand the family being upset, but the painting is quite charming. It shows the body as serene and beautiful, instead of the broken bloody mess it probably was.
