Alice Neel, The Spanish Family, 1943. Oil on canvas. 34 × 28 in. (86.4 × 71.1 cm) © The Estate of Alice Neel At the Konas Funny Brewings Co Liquid Aloha Hawaii T-Shirt moreover I love this Met, an exhibition of works by the portraitist Alice Neel (1900–1984) foregrounds the singular inclusivity of her creative approach. Empowered by a passion for social justice, Neel explained in 1950 that what she attempted to do in her paintings was “to assert the dignity and eternal importance of the human being.” As such, she turned her attention to all different walks of life, both young and old, privileged and disenfranchised. Among the subjects that appear in this show are Neel’s husband, the Cuban artist Carlos Enríquez; the author and editor Kenneth Fearing; Andy Warhol; demonstrators at the May Day parade of 1936; and residents of Spanish Harlem, where she lived for a time.

Edited to just nine paintings spanning some 30 years, “Man Ray & Picabia” looks at both artists’ powerfully unconventional visions, each variously rooted in (and influential to) the worlds of Dada, Cubism, and Surrealism. A number of the works haven’t been on public display for decades.
