His viewership spawns sponsorships, and collaborations with big companies who pour money into the guy she can do these things. Many of the videos aren’t even his own money, or only a portion of it is. The rest is sponsorship money. So it makes sense to spend money on marketing. It’s a necessity even. The bill and Melinda foundation, (among others that surely exist, I just don’t know if them) get their funding from elsewhere, namely bill gates own wealth, though I’m sure others donate money as well. This money is already there, and spending money on marketing would be a waste when that could go towards their cause instead.

He has 51 million views on that video so far, and that video came out yesterday. He will continue to get views for years to come. If we just go based on ad revenue alone, he’d cover his costs as long as wells cost under $5k each. I googled “how much do wells cost to build in Africa,” and it says $1800-$10,000. My bet would be that these wells, with plastic tanks, simple wood stands, in small remote villages, are on the low end of that estimate.
