If you’re married into a rather traditional partenal family, if you can’t give birth to a boy then there’s a chance your family- in- law would encourage your husband to make a child with another woman and you’ll probably be discarded. Worse, ancestry worship and tons of superstitions and extra worshipping duties varying among families. You can be scolded quite badly if you mess up because to them, you’ll be responsible to any misfortunes coming if you mess up. NOT all families nor Vietnamese men are like that but that’s the general mindset, whether one recognize and fight against it or not. Saying this from my experiences. I’m the sole child of a rather well- educated family where my grandparents held respectable job positions in their days. My biological father is their only son so culturally, they required my mom to bear a boy as the heir. My mom tried all possible ways, including several in vitro methods that leaves her with complications yet failed. So when she found out about my father’s affair with one of his colleagues who is also married, you know what my paternal family did? I recorded the meetings of my grandmother, my aunt (my father’s older sister) and my father discussing how to mentally torture my mom to drive her insane so that she would either commit suicide or divorce my father. The final goal was to manipulate her into freeing my father so he can get together with that other woman. They fabricated lies to tell their extended family to cover up. Had the house helper lady not helped my mom escaped when they physically & mentally assualted her she would have been killed while I was at school. They took my house keys and put me under their surveillance until I cause too much ruckus for them that they had to let me leave with my mom. Heck, they didn’t even allowed her to enter the house to get her own belongings. I still returned to that how every school day during high school because that house was near the school. Once when my mom came to pick me, my father threatened to leave her with only one arm and one leg if she came even near the gate. The reason for her mistreatment: she could bear a boy child. Digging deeper to why, the short answer is ancestry worship. Since the first born male is responsible for performing ancestry worship rituals, especially the eldest son of the previous eldest son in the extended family line, failing to bear a male child to take on that role is failing to honor one’s parents and ancestors. An aspect I hate and espises so much of my own Vietnamese. I basically lost all interest in real life romance several times over dating 2 Vietnamese guys who despite being Evangelical Christians, one a church staff responsible for guiding newer fellow Christians indeed, completely disregarded my requests to keep proper physical distances just in case (despite being rather touch-starved and emotionally neglected myself), and somehow gaslighted and guilt tripped me into almost giving them what they only care about: my body. I stood my ground, spoke my mind and broke up with them as soon as I felt unsafe. If these 2 are Christians who doesn’t do ancestry nor idol worshipping (like local land gods/ land keeper deities, Buddhas, and dietified historical figures added to the mix), and are under stricter moral and religious standards than a regular Vietnamese one, how would you think one will treat you?
