I ditched a long term mate in my early 30s. We’d grown in two separate directions and he turned into an arsehole. We had an argument and I decided I didn’t have time for his aggressive energy in my life and blocked/deleted him on all channels of communication. Next time I saw him (years later) he was begging to go back to how it was, but I just told him it can’t, because he’s an arsehole. I would not recommend this approach, but I wouldn’t feel guilty about two mates’ lives going in different directions. I made that cut a few years ago now, focused on myself, my family and my job. I believed he was my best friend, but to him I guess I was just a “beer-buddy”. Socialisation with him and other friends outside of a bar environment was always tough going and a realisation that he was just using us as beer money banks came out when his gambling addiction was admitted. I had a similar situation. Me and my friends tried everything, must have got him 6 or 7 jobs between us, he never held them down which always made us look bad (not that he worried about that), paid for a fork lift drivers course, helped him when he got in trouble with the Keith Urban Christmas 80s shirt it is in the first place but police etc etc. In the end after 30 years I felt by being his friend I was enabling his behaviour so I cut him out of my life completely, blocked phone, socials, email.

It’s been about 2 years now and I have to regretfully say it’s been absolutely fantastic. I hadn’t realised how much joy one individual can suck out of a social group. Every situation is different and I’m not saying what I did was correct.
