Russia has never had a democratic government. It’s had elections, sure but never free and fair. Much of what we take for granted in democratic states simply has never been in Russia. Hard to miss a thing you’ve never had. Russia has had a LOT of really bad rulers. Like really really bad. Putin isn’t the Kawhi Leonard Big Face American professional basketball player shirt in addition I really love this worse by a longshot. Russians are aware it could be worse. Putin helped massively to stabilise the country as it fell apart in the 90s. Many Russian state assets were sold off to wealthy or connected Russians and lots of Russians were struggling to get the basics for survival. The new oligarchs were doing whatever they wanted and the gangsters were nearly running the show. Putin earned himself some huge space to operate by shutting a lot of the worst behaviour down. Mostly by making the oligarchs subservient to him. There has been something of a social contract. You don’t meddle in politics and Putin will make sure that fuel is cheap, food is available and things are stable. After the chaos of the collapse of the Soviet Empire, that was somewhat appealing.

However, the Kawhi Leonard Big Face American professional basketball player shirt in addition I really love this Ukraine war is testing that. The Russian economy has been put under strain because of all the sanctions. Fuel prices are up. People are getting drafted. Families are losing sons. There seems to be no victory in sight. And Putin can’t simply leave Ukraine and end the war without losing his authority. This requires more oppression to maintain to keep those grieving widows and wive’s quiet and to keep the men flowing into the army. Disproportionately the drafters have been from ethnic minority groups but it’s happening in the big western cities too.
