People are irritated by “centrists” because it is often a cover for moral cowardice. I consider myself a moderate because I think we live in increasingly tribal, polarized times, and most people on both sides are highly reactionary/emotional and are willing to let their opinions be installed by whoever has an opinion they usually trust. Because it’s relative, which makes it easy to manipulate. If Group A says “we should murder a thousand people”, and group B says “no, we shouldn’t murder anyone”, then the centrists say “well look how reasonable I’m being: let’s just murder 500 people”. If group A wants to kill 1000 people and groups B wants to kill nobody, then the middle ground wouldn’t be “let’s kill 500”. The middle ground would be a matter of addressing the core reason why these particular 1000 killings are being considered.

Are we talking about 1000 criminals? Then there’s definitely a middle ground between execution and not punishing them at all. Are we talking about bombing 1000 soldiers? Well there’s probably a middle ground between dropping a bomb and total pacifism. Because it’s a bit of this, a bit of that, and generally, in the end, a lot of nothing that accomplishes jack shit and keeps a non-productive status quo…
