Had a relative who worked for a food bank. There were times they’d claim there was no way they’d be able to use as much of X thing as they’d have so they’d send boxes of food home with employees and volunteers. Literal boxes of beef roasts, premade sandwiches, hams it was crazy and I still don’t understand it. You still can’t serve expired food, and food that is commonly donated is almost always close to expiring (which is why it’s being donated). So if you get a big donation of a certain thing, even if you have food prep facilities (which many food banks do not) and you can’t prep it in time, it’s better to just send it home with people instead of throwing it out. I kind of get it. I worked for an org that provided services for people with intellectual disabilities. I barely made above minimum wage and had to deal with cleaning people’s shit and getting hit/bit. We would do runs for meals on wheels, and occasionally someone wouldn’t be there to take the Kadarius Toney American football wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs T-Shirt in contrast I will get this delivery and without explicit directions from the recepient we weren’t supposed to just leave it at their door.

You can bet your ass those undeliverable boxes would get dropped off at my apartment before returning back to base or discretely put in my trunk. I was working poor, and those meal boxes helped keep me stay afloat. I don’t know the Kadarius Toney American football wide receiver for the Kansas City Chiefs T-Shirt in contrast I will get this exact situation of the volunteers you mentioned, but when the poor are serving the destitute, it’s only human to take liberties when you can. I’ve had the thought a while back that SPAM Musubi would be a really really good shelter food. Dunno if true though Wow! The things that I do living out in Colorado to get crawfish! We have been known to drive to and back from the gulf coast just to get them lol Good to see a mix of things in there to if somone diet is irregular and limited throwing in a bit of everything will help even out stuff thier body needs. Not gonna lie, the trailer park part of me really wants that ham and cheese slider. We lived off of cheap roll lunch meat sandwiches for a minute. If you want some variety try some madras curry powder or a bulk Mexican spice blend (once you find what you like the 1 lb ones last you a pretty long time). You can make beans and lentils in so many different ways just by adding some flavorings. That and mix things up with some other legumes like chickpeas and split peas that are usually similarly priced. I know the feeling. I had to cut back on lamb and swap in chicken for a few of those meals. I also had to cut down the amount of beer I buy.
