You guys probably should’ve taught them these things at the appropriate age then. Maybe you wouldn’t have this issue if you were better at your job. I subbed for 2 third grade classes today they did a state achievement assessment. Out of like 44 students the highest score was a 60%. No one else even came close, most got 30% or below. I hate to say it but this is nothing new and this has always been a problem. What has changed though is there are no longer any other options for poor students. Decades ago high schools taught trades and students could load up on those classes and get skills to go get a job instead of spending their time in endless classes they cared nothing about. Kids could often drop out and just start working too, which isn’t really allowed these days. We also used to remove kids from the system if they were a problem, now we force them to stay which causes them to disrupt the other kids further. When I was doing my student teaching over 10 years ago I taught at a poorer, semi-urban school and it was astounding to be how bad this was. There were multiple kids in the sophomore history class who hadn’t passed the prerequisite history class, hadn’t passed any classes at all, and were continuing to be moved up grade levels. We had two students who were being called “seniors” because they were in their 4th year there but had never passed a class. One of them told me he was just waiting to turn 18 so he could stop coming. I also witnessed kids who couldn’t read harassing each other over not being able to read, it was insane.

This post could be describing my school as well. My last batch of 9th graders for math I had SEVERAL test 1st and 2nd grade on diagnostics. This isn’t from Covid. They are 7+ grade levels behind. She told me she went into the meeting like she had ‘no clue about child behavior’ and didn’t tell them her occupation so she could ‘test’ them. Anybody not guilty of neglect would have immediately told the teachers their background so they could hash that out as peers on some level, but she chose to be deceptive. Green refuses to discipline her son at all, because she says she doesn’t agree with a lot of methods, but I don’t think she wants to to deal with it at all. Can’t be bothered to even read the notes, meanwhile, some poor soul is trying to warn you about your kids behavior you admittedly IGNORE, so I made sure to snap that screenshot, in case there is any question about what went on in the household. She is also is college educated and has worked for children’s charities in some capacity her whole career. I kind of feel like some millennials seem to think we can still do latch-key kids, but we can’t, the world has changed. not my problem!
