Don’t let it connect to your network during the initial setup (or block it in your router settings) and use a 3rd party device like a Firestick. Edit: nobody is going to PiHole their fucking home when the average user doesn’t even understand basic networking. Susan from Milwaukee isn’t going to do this, so it’s easier to just tell her not to update her smart TV’s OS from the factory. Air gapping smart TVs removes an unnecessary UI which slows down the whole experience. Keep the TV dumb and use another input. It’s a nightmare to use a modern smart TV with all its bloatware. My in laws opted for this and it takes FOREVER to launch an app and the whole UX is extremely laggy. Firesticks are just as bad – they’re now auto playing video ads when you turn them on. Got an AppleTV a while back and there haven’t been any ads yet.

I have been using Google TV for years now and never see ads. I’ve enjoyed it so much I have one for every TV in my house as all I do is streaming now. Same. It works pretty flawlessly, especially combined with other Google products.
