It’s not always that these kids don’t want to, it’s often that they can’t! I grew up in rural poverty with a chronic illness so I couldn’t afford to learn to drive at 17. I moved to Swansea at 19, despite the buses here being beyond terrible, I’ve always managed to get by and felt environmentally I really didn’t need to. I’ve never had the disposable income to warrant learning to drive. Then covid happened and I finally decided at 35 that I needed the freedom so managed to scrape the money together. Failed my first test with nerves fluffing a hill start, I’ll get my licence eventually, no idea how I’ll be able to afford running a car but I am exhausted of missing out on things that are crucial for my well-being because buses don’t turn up – I broke my finger last autumn and couldn’t get public transport to the local injuries unit so I had to bodge heal it myself – I now have a permanently wonky and not totally functional finger. Please remember that money and health are things people don’t automatically have access to so driving, in my opinion, should always be considered a privilege and luxury – the earth can’t sustain our individual greed.

But one of the biggest pros is for emergencies and illness. My lessons were worth every penny when I was poorly and needed an emergency GP appointment and could just take it without needing to get a taxi/ask someone for a lift/try and work out public transport. See also, emergency vet visits After a lifetime of telling myself that I can’t draw I’ve taken up sketching and I’m modestly pleased with the results.
