I’m pretty sure that this came about because the first 3rd person action adventure games I played were Tomb Raider on PS1. Later when I had a choice of character I would choose female as it felt ‘normal’ for a 3rd person game. I also realised that I cared about the character more if she was female. With later games where there was the ability to design your character I would design her to be similar to my gf (now wife). Now even if I’m playing 1st person I atomically choose female given the option. I don’t identify with the character I’m playing, I care for the character I’m trying to help navigate the game. Making her female makes that easier I guess.
