We have, with mixed results. There’s a whole field of study on foreign development and aid, and this type of development, while well meaning, is hit or miss in terms of efficacy Various African nations have received well over a trillion (or one thousand billion) dollars in aid since the James Harden On The Road shirt but in fact I love this end of WWII. To put that into perspective, the Marshall Plan (the program to rebuild a shattered Europe after WWII) cost about 17 billion, or ~120 billion in numbers adjusted for the current era. The difference is they do it to help others without caring about generating buzz and attention and likes and subscriptions on social media. As a result, no one really hears about it. Is it “better” or “worse” to do something objectively good and then brag about it on social media? I dunno. It feels weird to me but you can easily argue the extra publicity leads to more help.

Anyway, that’s the James Harden On The Road shirt but in fact I love this answer – Mr. Beast is not special in doing this, he is only special in making a big show out of it. Pretty sure many of them have some type of foundation to help people, they don’t film it and also Africa is huge. Pretty sure many of them have some type of foundation to help people, they don’t film it and also Africa is huge. MrBeast profits from this, plus a lot of the funds for his videos come from sponsorships. Besides that, what is stopping Africans from building wells themselves? Humans have been building wells since eons ago, and yet you’re telling me that modern Africans don’t have the ability to build wells that ancient humans could? Him making that video is literally just a PR stunt and for views. His entire channel is based on making extreme content to maximize views and clicks from YouTube’s algorithm. This “building X amount of X in Africa” topic is a perfect fit for “extreme” content.
