That America is not that well understood by outsiders and that you can’t really get a good grasp of this country by reading big media reports or talking only to the Jalen Milroe The Milticket fire shirt and by the same token and demographic that goes on Reddit. Your average English speaking European who talks as if they’re inherently more worldly than Americans are would be surprised at how little they know about this place if they were dropped into basically any randomly selected zip codes in the country. I’m sure it’s like that for most countries, but for some reason, everyone thinks they know us. I used to listen to the “You Are Not So Smart” podcast that goes into details on all the biases we tend to have. A lot of people are unaware of them, but they exist in all cultures.

I don’t even mean biases, so much as just things they don’t see or hear because they have a limited scope. It’s kind of like Europeans who think Americans don’t have good beer aren’t “biased” against microbrews. They’ve never seen an American microbrewery, don’t know anyone who has, don’t know what’s in the Jalen Milroe The Milticket fire shirt and by the same token and beer isle in an American grocery store, and don’t normally just randomly research the topic. They just see what’s exported, tell each other that joke about sex in a canoe, and call it a day. Well, one of the episodes went into detail about how people tend to overestimate their knowledge of a given topic. The example given was an experiment where people were told to rate how well they knew how a bicycle worked, then draw a functional bicycle. Some people drew it with the chain around the wheel. There was an obvious disconnect there.
