You’re telling me that Yahoo! legitimately thought Tumblr was a more sound acquisition than Netflix and Hulu? I haven’t seen anyone use Yahoo! in years (aside from the rare legacy email address) and if I recall correctly, something happened to Tumblr involving nsfw content and people fled the platform, yeah? It’s actually kind of crazy how bad Yahoo management was. It’s like every decision you see that they made was literally the exact opposite decision of what they should have made. Every acquisition was bad. Every platform change they made was bad. It’s honestly impressive how incompetent they were.

Netflix with it’s mailing DVDs and managing access through partners like Roku may have felt like it had challenges they were not prepared for. Netflix’s own shows and movies were likely well outside what they could do. With what they were as a company? Absolutely. Maybe they looked at a selection of hand-curated picks from Tumblr’s staff to show the virtues of the platform (and stayed way the hell away from its vices). They did not understand Tumblr as a community – they never do.
