This is a fair question. Building wells is a half assed and cheap method for creating clout for yourself or your organisation. And for the people there it helps for just a moment, but does not resolve the problem, quite the opposite. The VAST majority of wealthy people don’t give a shit about the poor, especially in poor countries they can’t gain future profits or public opinion from.

Once a foreign aid sponsored well digging project in eastern Africa failed because before the new well the women of the village had to travel quite far to fetch the water and that gave the men of the village ample time to sit around and do absolutely nothing. Once the well was dug, it didn’t take long until the wives realized that the men were infact very lazy and started giving some constructive criticism. Soon after the well mysteriously was filled with stones and thus the women once again had to travel far to fetch water and all was well in the village (pun intended).
