What I did that helped me get interviews was customize my resume for each position I applied to. Instead of using the It’s The Most Wonderful Time For A Beer Beer Lovers shirt Apart from…,I will love this resume to say, “here’s what I’ve done before.” I use it to say, “here’s what I’ve done that I think is relevant to the position.” To be clear: I don’t lie. I just focus on making sure not to include irrelevant facts. For example, if the job is looking for someone with experience running software X, I make sure that I include a line item mentioning software X anywhere I might have used it. If I know they aren’t going to care about my knowledge of widgets, I’ll say I worked for Widget Co but not really elaborate unless part of that job included relevant tasks I did 100+ applications. Got 4 interviews and ultimately got a job on referral from a friend. They called me and invited me to a lunch “interview” where they explained the job and gave me an offer.

I realized very recently that my “easy network” wasn’t going to do it, and making “new friends” so I can work again is becoming a huge PITA but it’s an existentially necessary one… Consider re-writing your resume with a professional resume writer, under the current market conditions there are a lot of well-qualified experienced people out there available for most jobs.
