I worked in the It’s Fine I’m Fine Everything Is Fine Vintage Cat Father’s Day T-Shirt but in fact I love this federal government for 10 1/2 years and left for the private sector. After 8 years in the private sector (I hated every year of it) I returned to the federal government. Since I have returned I no longer fear being suspended for using paid sick days, I don’t worry about being laid off anymore, I now will have a pension when I leave the federal government (the private sector job I had didn’t have a pension), the feds match 5% of my 401K (TSP)(I put in $500 a check ?) and I now get about 5 weeks of paid annual leave (paid vacation) a year. Also it is literally impossible to be fired at the agency I work for. To recap being a federal employee now for 14 years total and only 6 years left to get a pension (I fall under the 6c retirement so I only have to do 20 years) is awesome. Being able to carry over the health insurance is a bonus due to the fact I must retire with the feds at the age of 57. And the icing on the cake as a federal employee is the ability to jump from one agency to another and the time as a federal employee continues. I have worked for 3 different agencies over the years.

Seems like there is a lot of disinformation in this sub. No one cares about an extra week of vacation. The answer is PENSION No American jobs offer a pension anymore. Corporate interests created bullshit 401ks which are not even in the It’s Fine I’m Fine Everything Is Fine Vintage Cat Father’s Day T-Shirt but in fact I love this same league. Where I’m from the federal pay is good, plus benefits. People, even with higher education can’t get pass $10ph in private sector, and rarely get the full 40 hr per week. I have a master’s degree and was unemployed for 4 years until I got this job. Now, if I move to the mainland, then a GS6 won’t cut it. As you can probably tell, whether or not federal benefits are good depend on what options are available to you in the private sector. Take a look at opm.gov – all the relevant information is public. Depending on standards in your industry and how in demand your skills are, your take on the benefits could range from absolutely amazing to incredibly mediocre.
