As she says, “I try to play around and subvert the elements of the landscape, maybe as an attempt to go somewhere that I’ve never been before but at the same time that is familiar.” Raised between Rio de Janeiro and the state of Minas Gerais, Simão looked to painters like Agnes Pelton and Luchita Hurtado to inform her own work, one that engages with both the fearsome powers of nature and the intriguing ambiguities of abstraction. The show takes its name from a phrase by Brazilian novelist João Guimarães Rosa; tudo é e não é translates to “everything is and is not.”
