Yes, absolutely. Before I became an FA I worked in my company’s inheritance department, and cannot tell you how many times I had to explain when speaking to someone that it doesn’t matter that the Itachi Swoosh Nike Akatsuki Hypebeast Anime Shirt and I will buy this will says they get a decedent’s assets, they were not the listed beneficiary and thus had no legal claim to whatever they had with us. The amount of people who don’t prepare a will or fill out their insurance beneficiary info, or heck don’t even have life insurance. Ugh. You can download a will template online! You don’t need anyone’s social security number to make them a beneficiary! Just do it! I made a bright pink 3 ring binder and wrote “So I’ve Died!” on it with a bunch of Lisa Frank drawings. It has all my will info, my work HR info to file the life insurance claim, contact names for everyone I want notified, all that.

The Funeral Consumers Alliance sells a book, available both in PDF and paper format, called Before I Go, You Should Know. It has space to put in all of your account numbers, pension entitlements, all that sort of thing for your survivors. It also has space to draft your obituary, advise them who to send it to (your old schools? your hometown newspaper?), tell them whether you want to be interred in a cemetery or cremated and scattered, tell them what you want to be sung at the Itachi Swoosh Nike Akatsuki Hypebeast Anime Shirt and I will buy this funeral, etc. In most places, any requests for your funeral aren’t binding on your heirs, but having been through this process four times with immediate family members (one brother, one sister, both parents), it’s nice to know what they would have wanted because you are being blindsided by everything. My brother especially was a bit of an idiot and insisted on Doing It Up Right, which would have mortified my mother but we were all shocked by her sudden death so hooray, he added tens of thousands onto the funeral expenses for an engraved vault none of us will ever see. Some examples include Anthony Maglica (the inventor of the Maglite). He had to pay $29 million in a palimony case due to holding himself out as being married. This was in a non-common law state (California).
