I broke down in tears watching the concentration camp survivors kiss the soldiers on their cheeks, crying! Damn, those tears again. what were some of the ways you “normalized” your life in concentration camps? how did you keep yourself “entertained” if that’s the correct word. Life was not normalized. You lived from minute to minute. You didn’t know if you’d live through the next minute, let alone the day. thank you for the response. I apologize if my question came off as too trivial for your experience. I have no doubt your memories are beyond anything imaginable, and i do sincerely hope you have a life of ever lasting peace

Hi u/cannabisized. This is Ben’s actual grandson Adam here. Even for myself, after a lifetime of hearing the stories somewhat assumed that there were moments of normalcy. I loved how he responded though and hope we never get complacent about these types of vivid crisies actual people experience, even today. I always wondered the same thing, so I appreciate the question and the horrifying, illuminating, direct answer. I’m so grateful for the survivors who take on the burden of public remembrance, even if they shouldn’t have to. I remember reading a book about letters the author’s relatives wrote from Poland in the early years of WWII. One of the letter writers stated that “each day lasts a year” which became the title of the book. Given the minute-to-minute nature of life for Holocaust victims, was suicide & severe mental illness typical or did people somehow avoid succumbing to those sad & horrifying circumstances? If the latter, how? OP answered this question in an earlier comment, he says he was too worried about survival to contemplate suicide That’s terrible, I’ve been in juvenile prison and jail. I know confinement, I know waiting minute to minute. Just wondering what’s going to happen at that hearing , but I don’t know about wondering if your life is going to be taken at any minute. I would lose it.
