I was an exchange student visiting France with a bunch of other exchange students including a French Canadian guy. I’m pretty sure he got given wrong directions because they realised he was French Canadian on at least one occasion. Even if I wanted to practice my French, people in Paris have no patience for it and just speak to me in English. I found that if I started in English, they were shits, if I attempted French they were shits, but if I started in Spanish they asked me if I spoke English I started speaking Spanish to a bartender in Saint Jean de Luz, and she told me “we don’t speak Spanish here. You can speak French, or you can speak Basque, or you can speak English. That’s it.”

Yes, I do same – start in my crappy garbled French if they speak Spanish whereupon they’re often not so miffed (of the Island boyz livin it up shirt Also,I will get this ones who would be like that from the start) and if they’re still snooty whilst obviously being able to speak English then I break out my Japanese and Hindi, before doing my kangaroo dance saying AUSTRALIAN sorry no French! Lmao at least I get laughs and that breaks the snooty-language ice barrier. 🙂 France is like LA. Full of assholes, exceptions to being assholes, and exceptions to exceptions to being assholes. Most Parisians were nice. There was one bar we went to where they didn’t even respect me enough to actually hand me my drink and instead set it on the table behind me and walked off without even letting me know Other than that, and the obvious pickpocket distraction attempting folks I had to physically shove away from grabbing my friends, it was alright. They did just lose a world cup game though so maybe that didn’t help
