True true. Most dresses I bought for FF have lasted me few years with normal wear and tear. I still wear some of them after altering the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this sizes and tightening up some seams (some seams are badly put – you gotta admit). Except jeans though – H&M jeans are the worst – they actually rip from the middle after one year (this happened too many times), so now I bought one expensive jeans for 120 euros (tommy hilfiger) and that lasted me 5 years now. I don’t even take care of them and I have a few pieces of H&M clothing from when I worked there at 16, I am 31 now. All the pieces that held up are basics or the ones with the cream tag (I forget what the section is called). Also kind of related because I’ve seen people mention how the clothing is made. When I started working at H&M they made me watch a bunch of videos about how they totally don’t use sweatshops, there were interviews with the factory workers talking about how awesome their jobs are. 🫠 a lovely work of fiction Also I frequently thrift Madewell, Anthro, and J. Crew, and even gently used secondhand items have lasted me several years. They’re midtier, not really fast fashion.

To really see the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this quality difference, buy a basic black cotton crewneck from both Old Navy and Gap. The Old Navy one is going to be coarse, won’t soften with the wash, and may have uneven stitching. The Gap tee will be noticeably softer and will hold up with wear. I have a few Banana Republic black tees I bought nearly a decade ago and I wear them nearly weekly and they’re only now just getting threadbare enough to replace them. But I also separate my laundry, wash my soft clothes (no denim, towels, or zippers) on cold water and hang dry my clothes. And I never ever use fabric softener – not only because I think it degrades clothes faster, but also, it increases the flammability of your fabrics.
I have old navy and gap tees and they hold up exactly the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same for me. Some of my old navy shirts are men’s, some are the “luxe” fabric, and some are 100% cotton (more coarse). They’ve been purchased over time over the last ~10 years. Only my oldest tees have any signs of wear (pilling). I wash everything on cold, normal cycle. And dry on low or extra low. Unscented detergent, no fabric softener or anything else. I truly don’t get what I’m doing differently compared to people who have serious quality problems with old navy stuff. Fast fashion isn’t about the quality of clothing or cost, it’s about if it’s a fast cycle of fashion made (most often) by slave labour or poor working conditions. Often companies keep intentional differences in the quality of sewing to distinguish between their more expensive and more affordable brands (ex. The gap, old navy). If there’s a typical storefront it’s probably still fast fashion. To not be fast fashion the brand would need a slower fashion cycle and be made under ethical conditions (ex. handmade in Canada, Province of Canada might be a good example; brands like Reformation are more like fast fashion because of their fashion cycle though their working conditions are in theory better). Yes don’t wash clothes you want to keep looking nice with denim or jackets or anything with big metal zippers/buttons/snaps, and put those “keep nice” items in small mesh delicates bags when washing. Mesh bags really make a difference over time! Wash cold and either hang or lay flat to air dry. For wool and silk, always use a detergent specially formulated for those kinds of fabrics, and a tiny bit will do. Those fabrics are proteins, so they need specific detergents if you want them to stay soft/looking as they should.

It’s washing machine quality, I am positive. I’ve had cheap apartment washers that left my clothes – Old Navy and Boden alike – looking like they’d been through a war and I could never figure out why; you’d have thought the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this drum was lined with sandpaper. Now I have a decent washer/dryer and wash and dry my clothes with basically wild abandon – I don’t air dry ANYTHING – and never have issues with things falling apart. I have always washed ALL my clothes in cold water (I read somewhere as a kid it’s better for the environment or something) and never really had a problem with shrinkage, etc. And most of my clothes are cheap AF…come from Walmart, etc. They usually hold up pretty well, except for pants in the crotchal area due to chub rub.
I’ve been trying to figure out what exactly my husband does to shred his clothing so quickly and can’t tell. We have the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same activity level and I do most of the laundry so why are we constantly having to replace his things? Meanwhile I have a hard time getting rid of old clothes because they’re still in great shape. It makes no sense! This happens to my bf too. I buy him the same stuff I wear and we wash our clothes together. My only guess is being a larger human puts more wear on it somehow? Not washing after every wear really made a huge difference for me. I even buy a lot of drop sleeve stuff now because it stays smelling fresh for longer lol Yes, to all of this. I don’t buy a ton new, but I have had (& kept!) items I knew could fall apart, because I was proactive. One was a pair of pants with loose fastenings: I knew I could fix it but I’ve had to fix them all since I’ve owned them-if the sewing looks suspec, it is. The other was a recent dress with a poorly attached strap which is on it’s way to the tailor before it even sees my washing machine.
I think if you’re looking for what to avoid, fabrics can often be a decent indicator. I have consistently seen excessive pilling with some multi blends, cheap, plastic-y fleece, & acrylic. Rayon, if it has any stretch, seems to inevitably stretch out, even if you religiously dry flat. If a fabric has comparatively weird washing direction to what it usually has, & it’s best to err on the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this side of caution, especially if it doesn’t seem like it belongs in the dyer. For cashmere specifically, the price difference has to do with fiber length & thickness, which do affect the durability & softness. To add to this, there 100% are also people who are obsessive about how stuff is washed and overly baby everything they have when they really don’t have to. I think in general just following the tag instructions is the way to go, and if you can, air dry when possible!
Also yeah.. OP I’m sure you’ve seen other comments by now but those brands you listed aren’t cheap?? Lol like that is ridiculous to say that here. That being said, it is a good list of brands whos items are way overpriced for what you get. Caring for your clothes is like caring for your body every day. Workouts everyday to retain shape/caring for purchased clothing perfectly to retain shape. I bought my niece a nice cardigan made with real wool and I believe alpaca, so it needs to be hand washed. She’s a bit older now and more careful with her clothes so I thought it was OK to give her higher quality clothes. Yeah, so many people now seem to have the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this completely unrealistic expectation that their clothes will look new forever. (I think that’s partly to justify buying something new, tbh.) There’s a big difference between “this shirt got a hole after a few wears” and “this sweater is starting to pill after a year.”
Yeah I was super excited because I thrifted a Madewell cashmere sweater for $5 two weeks ago, and I would never have otherwise gotten that since Madewell ordinarily sells stuff like that for well over $100 (at least according to their current website.) That was a Big Find for me, not a wardrobe staple. I know there’s a lot of fast fashion that likes to masquerade as more expensive fashion by charging more for a similarly poor product. But I wouldn’t put these brands in the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same tier as Shein type stuff. Their quality really has gone downhill, though. The price point may not be cheap but their items sure seem to be. I waited two months for a $160 skirt I pre-ordered that appeared to be heavyweight, lined cotton in photos (fabric listed as 100% cotton minus elastic in waistband) and when it arrived it was a thin, single layer of fabric that was friggin’ seethrough in room lighting. That was October. December I ordered a pair of $140 corduroy pants hoping it was a one-off and the material was so thin it felt like trying on leggings. I couldn’t believe it. I unfortunately missed the return window on the skirt but the pants went straight back. I can get thicker material pants from Old Navy. This sub has never understood that most brand names are simply retailers, sourcing from countless manufacturers, who are sourcing their fabrics from more countless sources, who are sourcing their dyes and fibers from even more countless sources. Sometimes it’s good shit that has to be undersold just to move, sometimes it’s cheap shit that is being oversold to generate profit. There’s some variation in between, but you really can’t say across the board that a retailer is all good quality all the time, there are too many variables.
This is so true. Maybe 15 years ago I bought a handful of black tank tops from H&M’s basics line Divided and wore them constantly. They held up fine aside from a little expected fading. A couple years later I decided to get more of the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this same black Divided tanks. I could tell they were constructed differently, both the fabric and the way they’d been sewn, but they seemed okay and I didn’t think about it. The second time I wore one of them my thumb went right through it. Not at a seam or anything, just right through the fabric. I’d never experienced the whole “clothes falling apart” thing before, but now I believe it happens, at least sometimes. Different fabrics, different factories, stores slapping a label on whatever’s cheapest for them. It really does happen. Something for me too is if I know it’s a more expensive garment I’m much more likely to baby it. I have a few silk blouses from Sezane. They’re the only shirts I get dry cleaned, I only wear them with short sleeves undershirts so my deodorant never makes contact, and they never go in my hamper. They look brand new. Probably all of my clothes would hold up like this if I tested them all this special.
They’re the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this only shirts I get dry cleaned, I only wear them with short sleeves undershirts so my deodorant never makes contact This is really important. People used to have a layer between themselves and their garments. That layer was easily washed. You simply wouldn’t need to worry about washing stuff like wool or silk (both relatively fragile, esp when wet, compared to linen) all the time and of course it would last longer. I’ve got two pairs of $7 F21 jeans that I bought specifically for my hands-on retail job (stocking, building, inventory, customer service, climbing), around 2008. I’ve a F21 miniskirt from the 2010s ish (probably older because I thrifted it) and it still holds up and it’s still so cute. I also have a F21 sweater from 2021 and it’s shredding but it’s still so cute. Absolutely can make it last
Ask anyone who works in fashion – the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this average American consumer washes their clothes too often at too high a temperature and uses tumble dry over hanging (common in much of the rest of the world). This is why the clothes don’t last. I moved to Europe from the US where it’s rare to have a dryer and I noticed the longevity of my clothes improved. I hang dry all my clothes. I do use the dryer for sheets and towels. I don’t know why everyone uses their dryer, but it’s not good for elastic, which is all the stretch and in a lot of clothes.i also think fabric softener is not great for clothes because most of my athletic wear says not to use them. I use my dryer because my climate is 75-80% humidity and cool temperatures year round. Things can take over a week to dry on a clothesline…. even if I I get lucky and it doesn’t rain on them. I also live in a humid climate. We bought a dehumidifier which we run next to the hanging clothes. Dries quickly without damaging the clothes.
Here where I live now in Chicago I don’t even have a laundry room. I sometimes hang stuff on the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this porch in good weather (rare) but otherwise it’s only my most delicate items since the space I have for air drying is so so limited. I have just started hang drying all my clothes and it’s a lifesaver. The exception is one particular style of pants which fit immaculately when put through the dryer but are too big otherwise. Fabric softener is fine for most clothing, but you should skip it for anything you want to be absorbent like athletic wear or towels. Every student in the UK gets sent off to university with a drying rack- it’s just an inherent part of how laundry gets done in Europe. And if you have a garden, there is a clothes line for drying in good weather. When I moved to the USA (just before you could get anything on Amazon) I struggled to find one in the stores. But I couldn’t recommend one more; you’ll double the lifespan of your clothes.
When people talk about fast fashion falling apart, they’re talking about stuff like shein, temu, the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this ig brands that are glorified drop shippers, anything that’s excessively cheap like that, . To a lesser degree places like h&m, express, f21,old navy, and stores that only/primarily have an online presence like fashionnova, nasty gal, so on. The trick is to look at materials, reviews, and see if there are any tell-tale signs that part might be made poorly (ex. Tiny single thread loops holding sleeve or a belt on). If you can go in store you have a better chance of being able to tell the quality of a garment. YMMV because quality control is often poor in fast fashion brands, so two people can buy the same pair of pants and one will get holes in the seams while the other will hold up.
I bought my favourite winter jacket from Forever 21 for $30. It’s been 4 years and that thing is still great. It’s corduroy with sherpa lining, super warm but also easy to move in. At that time I could only afford F21, HnM and Walmart. I’m still wearing some jeans and dresses 3+ years later. It really depends on fabric, build quality, and use. Same as any other brand I guess, except in cheap fashion you have to hunt longer to find the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this good pieces. No I dont think so. I think people buy a 5 dollar t-shirt and treat it like a disposable item because it was so cheap and then say that fast fashion doesn’t last. Obviously people are going to treat a 400 dollar item better than a 2 dollar impulse buy on Shein or Temu. Also consider general wear and tear, if you wear something a couple times a year versus every week they’re going to fall apart differently.
I’ve heard from a lot of people that with cashmere you should spring for the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this expensive stuff, but never with actual examples. Thank you for the comparison! I’ve recently read something about how cashmere is made, traditional cashmere is the winter coat that gets shed in the spring and is combed off the goats (so once a year per goat!) this way it takes multiple goats to produce a single sweater. In order to produce more and cheaper they just shear the goats so they’re regular, much coarser fur is mixed in (which also means the animals might freeze). Cheap cashmere is an environmental (and fashion) nightmare. Massive overgrazing creates sickly goats with short, weak hair fibers. But because consumers want cheap, cheap, cheap, we’re destroying one of the planet’s most important ecosystems, the Mongolian grasslands, all for a sub-par product. If someone wants an affordable cashmere sweater that’s not garbage, look for vintage. Those are all very expensive brands to me that I only buy on sale, but I will say I have old sweaters from forever 21 and some stuff from Zara that has held up perfectly over the years even after washing many times. I think it really depends on how you take care of your items as all stores are gunna have hit or miss items. I air dry a lot of my stuff and only wash on cold. I’m also trying not to wash certain items as often
In my experience, price isn’t always the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this best indicator of quality. I’ve had some cheaper pieces that lasted years, and some pricier items that gave up the ghost super fast. The key is to look at the material and how the clothes are made. Cashmere, for example, can vary a lot. You could score a cheaper one that lasts if it’s well-made, but even expensive cashmere can start looking worse for wear if it’s not cared for properly. So, if you’re deciding whether to splurge on that $400 sweater, maybe check out reviews, feel the material, and think about how much care you’re willing to give it. Sometimes the $100 option is just as good if you treat it right! I wash everything in delicate/wool cycle, even jeans, even cashmere (separately of course), and the only things that really ‘fall apart’ were h&m and mango t-shirts that were cut on bias for some reason so they lost their shape, two pairs of jeans that I forgot to turn inside out so they lost a bit of color on the folds, and h&m sweaters with terrible composition that pilled beyond comprehension. All the rest (down coats, wool pants, delicate second hand mohair and silk, cheap mass market cotton and viscose clothes) you name it) holds on.
How is it that so many people don’t know basic rules about washing their clothes? It always amazes me in this sub. I think these nicer for fast fashion brands tend to hold up totally fine with a few bad items here and there. Sézane in my experience is a step up from the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this others you listed on average but still have some misses here and there. The biggest issue is going to be fabric quality, but looking at the composition before buying should give you some clues. I try to opt for natural fibers when possible as a personal preference, and know that I hate 100% polyester anything. I get years and years of wear from all the brands you listed tho. I don’t start having problems on average until we get to old navy, forever 21, and cheaper.
That said there are brands who really deliver on quality construction like Mara Hoffman. Everything I own from her looks almost brand new with proper care, and is super super well constructed (my tailor was shook by how sturdy a blazer was that I took in!) – but they have a price point to match. I think the Indiana Pacers Indiana Fever 2024 Proud Basketball Champions Shirt so you should to go to store and get this brands you mentioned are good quality. Some items from Fashion Nova and Shein really will fall apart after a few washes not to mention the environmental and societal impact those brands have. I saw this guy take apart the stitching on designer bags and a lot of them were made no differently than any quality leather bag. Anyway, when ppl say buy good quality, I think you’re doing just fine with a $100 J Crew cashmere
