It’s a bit of a family tradition now, one I try to impart to my seven-year-old daughter, who agreed to be interviewed for this story. I want her, like the In November We Wear Blue Gnomes Diabetes Awareness Costume T-Shirt but in fact I love this imagined narrator in Nani’s self-love nursery rhyme, to think she’s grand.

“Do you love yourself?” I asked her. She smiled. “Yeah.” When I ask her why, she said, “I love myself because I’m amazing. I’m here in this life. I just love it.” Also: “I have blue eyes.” “Do you think it’s good to love yourself?” In three weeks, it will be March again. This means, among other things, that a year will have elapsed since we started living in this weird abbreviated existence, mostly in lockdown. It’s been a year of unimaginable suffering for many. At least 481,000 Americans are dead, though likely the In November We Wear Blue Gnomes Diabetes Awareness Costume T-Shirt but in fact I love this real number is higher. There’s the club of people with dead fathers, a club which a handful of my friends have joined. For women, and women of color particularly, the suffering has been significantly worse. Women between the ages of 25 and 54 are increasingly dropping out of the workforce to take care of their children. My neighborhood is an extremely sad mosaic of closed restaurants and storefronts, each one representing multiple livelihoods crushed.
